Navy League Memphis' 2012 edition of our popular Naval Aviation Familiarization Day and wine-tasting acknowledged the 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812. The event was held this year on Thursday, October 4, at the Wilson Air Center, Memphis International airport for the fifth year in a row.
During the day, hundreds of students from Memphis City Schools, Shelby County Schools and midshipmen from the University of Memphis, along with a large group of Navy Delayed Entry Program candidates, had the opportunity to view 8 front-line Navy and Coast Guard aircraft and talk to the crews about the aircraft missions and about how to become involved in Naval Aviation. Recruiters from the Navy Recruiting District Nashville handed out promotional and marketing material.
For the evening event, a uniformed sword arch from the University of Memphis NROTC provided a formal entrance for the ladies, while our Sea Cadet unit smartly presented colors to kick off the awards program portion of the evening's events. The local Memphis Knights provided "big band" background music, and the gala also offered tasty hor d'ouerves, dozens of great wines, and a high-quality silent auction. All Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard units in the area were represented as well, along with our co-sponors, Navy Recruiting District Nashville. 500-600 business leaders, citizens, and military from the area commands attended the festivities.
